Standard 2 - Know the content and how to teach it

Effective teaching requires the educator to have thorough knowledge and understanding of contemporary strategies that engage the learner in the content being taught.  Quality educational practice is underpinned by education theory that aims to actively involve the learner (Leinster, 2003). Teaching effectiveness is dependent on the individual learning styles of the students meaning the educator must have a repertoire of teaching skills that can be practiced in the classroom. When determining how to teach the educator must consider the characteristics of the learner, pedagogical content knowledge and the learning outcomes (Hollins, 2011). Knowledge of the student’s prior learning will inform the educator when planning lesson sequences.  An effective teaching and learning sequence incorporates inquiry, observation and practice (Hollins. 2011). The educator’s knowledge of curriculum and assessment also impacts the effectiveness of the educator, as the educator is accountable for implementing learning and teaching programs that support the learning outcomes of the students.

By incorporating ICT in the classroom the educator can increase the number, range, and depth of the learning experiences made available in the classroom. In today’s world it is no longer considered an option but rather a necessity to equip students with the knowledge and skills to understand and utilize the potential of such resources. (Eutrance, 2001, as cited in Pluss, 2007). ICT increases the range of teaching and learning strategies that can be introduced across all subject areas. ICT promotes student engagement and encourages active participation as opportunities for interaction increase.
